About LWT

Credentials & Philosophy

I’m Lindsay, a qualified counsellor.  I hold a Graduate Diploma in Counselling (PACFA Reg. 23676).  I offer counselling for general mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and stress.  I specialise in addiction recovery.

My philosophy is rooted in the belief that mental and emotional well-being are fundamental to general health, and therapy can be a powerful tool for achieving this balance.   My non-judgemental approach, creates a trusting and safe environment,  enabling clients to explore and express their true selves without shame or fear.  Everyone has the ability to lead a happy and fulfilling life.  When accepted and understood and equipped with the right tools, self-understanding and compassion, people not only heal and grow......they thrive!

Prior to counselling, 17 years working in the corporate world, both in the UK and overseas,  provided me with a very real understanding of the stresses and challenges in this environment.  I currently provide support for employees through various Employee Assistance Programs and numerous companies across the hospitality industry.

As a qualified yoga teacher in the disciplines of Hatha (Level 1, Yoga Aus) and yin (Sarah Powers -Insight Yoga), I value the mindfulness and breathing techniques that often form part of my approach.

Approach

Finding the right fit with a therapist is really important as the strength of the working relationship underpins the overall success of the healing process.  I place a strong emphasis on building a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship with my clients.

I work collaboratively with clients, empowering them to achieve their goals and better manage their challenges by increasing self-awareness and compassion.

Whilst my approach to therapy is embedded in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theory (understanding how childhood trauma shapes behaviour and unconscious patterns), I take a holistic approach to meeting a client's individual needs. I draw on a range of different modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness (Including Breathing Techniques)
  • Person-Centred Counselling
  • Narrative Therapy

Services

I work with adults (18+) to support a wide range of common problems including anxiety, depression, grief, stress and intimacy issues. I specialise in addiction management and recovery.

I understand that making contact with a therapist is a courageous first step.  If you would like to explore working with me, I offer an informal 15 minute discovery call at no cost to chat through your needs and answer any questions you might have.

I look forward to hearing from you and accompaying you on your journey to a more balanced and fulfilled life.

Need to Knows

Who I work with

I work with adults who need help with many difficult life problems such as learning to cope with traumatic experiences and events, dealing with grief, depression and anxiety or managing harmful emotions or behaviours.

How much therapy is needed?

This depends entirely on the individual and their needs.  The best growth and healing outcomes result from attending therapy sessions on a regular basis. Ideally, our sessions are held on the same day and time, every week.  Whilst it is important to try and attend regular weekly sessions, I understand that sometimes this is not possible, so I will try to work around these times with you.

Is counselling confidential?

In most cases, yes. However, there are some exceptions to this.  These aspects are discussed in the first session.

The first session

You can expect be heard and supported in a safe, non-judgmental environment.  In the first session I explain how I work with clients and give you the opportunity to share what has brought you to counselling and any specific goals. Questions are welcome.

What are your rates and how do I pay?

50-minute counselling sessions are offered to clients, usually on a weekly basis.  Bank transfer is the preferred payment method and funds must be cleared before the session.  If, after our first session, we decide to work together on an ongoing basis, we will discuss how you would like to proceed and discuss fees.

What if I need to cancel or change my appointment?

If you need to change your appointment for any reason, please provide 48 hours notice.  Full fees apply if cancellation is after the 48 hour notice period.

Is online therapy as effective as seeing a therapist in person?

Online therapy can be just as effective as face to face and in some cases better.  The Zoom platform is used for reliability and security.

How do I prepare for an online session?

Please find a comfortable, quiet, private setting where you can’t be disturbed.  Ensure all devices are turned off and turn off the ringer and any notifications, iif using a mobile phone, to minimise distractions. Position your device on a flat, stable surface.  Choose a light room and position your head and body in the frame.  Wearing headphones can reduce echo and provides an extra level of confidentiality.  Also, please have a drink to hand.
